Search and pickers

The ⌘K palette — what it searches, how results are grouped, and the keys — and the card pickers that replace long dropdowns, with search and filter chips.

The ⌘K palette

Press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux), or click Search… in the top bar. On a phone, the search icon in the top bar opens it. Press ⌘K again, or Esc, to close it.

The input reads "Jump to a workspace, a page, an organization…". The palette is 42rem wide on a desktop and the width of the screen less 32px on a phone. The results area is at most 60% of the screen's height and scrolls.

What it searches

Results come in four groups, always in this order. Each group shows how many results it has.

Group What is in it The line under each result
Pages Every sidebar page for where you are — the organization's pages, or the workspace's — plus Your Bookbag account The sidebar section it sits under, then its address
Workspaces The workspaces of the organization you are in The workspace's description, its mission, or its kind and status
Organizations Every organization you are a member of Your role in it, and the one you are in for the current one
Actions New workspace, when you are in an organization Create one in {organization}

Typing matches the result's name, its group and that second line. So you can type a section name, such as Governance, or a role, such as Admin, as well as a page title.

A group with more than 12 results shows the first 12 and a Show all N row. Choosing that row opens the rest of the group where it is. When nothing matches, the palette says Nothing matches "…".

Your Bookbag account opens your profile, sign-in and email settings at Bookbag account.

The keys

Key What it does
↑ ↓ Move through the results. The highlighted row stays in view.
Home / End Jump to the first or last result.
↵ Open the highlighted result, or open a group's Show all row.
Esc Close.

The footer shows these keys and a count: how many results are showing out of how many match.

The palette is a labelled dialog. The input keeps focus, and a screen reader follows the highlighted row as the arrow keys move it.

Card pickers

When a choice is from a long list, Madebook shows it as a grid of cards rather than a dropdown. Each card has an icon, a name and one line saying what it is. Above the cards:

  • a search box, which matches the name, that line, and the card's category;
  • filter chips, one per category the options actually carry, plus All. Chips appear only when there are at least two categories to choose between.

Pressing Enter in the search box chooses the only card left, if exactly one is left; otherwise it does nothing. It never submits the form. A required picker stops the form from being submitted until something is chosen.

These choices use card pickers:

Where What you choose Chips
Skills → New skill → Start from a template A skill template, or Blank The skill categories
Skills → New skill, scope One workspace Which workspace the skill belongs to The workspace's kind
Workspace → People → Add someone A member of the organization, or Nobody from the list to add them by email instead Their organization role
Connections → Create MCP token Who is this token for? — Me, or another registered member Their organization role
Connections → Create MCP token Which workspaces can it reach? — all workspaces, or one The workspace's kind
Workspace → Settings → Linked products → Link The CodeBook or OpenBook workspace that is the same work The workspace's kind

The governance page's template pickers (Add compliance, Policy templates) already worked this way; the other pickers now match them.

Short, fixed lists — a role, a scope, an expiry — are still dropdowns. So are list filters, multi-select checklists, and pickers that already had their own search.
